This year the Delta Gamma Zeta chapter adopted three loving families who wished for a Merry Christmas through the Black Family and Child Services agency.
On Thursday, December 20, 2012, the families gathered at BFCS to receive their Christmas presents. The vibrant smiles on the children's faces were priceless; a constant reminder that the gift of giving is the best of all.
A special thank you to Michele Simpson of BFCS for her hard work in coordinating the Christmas Adopt-a-family program each and every year.
The Delta Gamma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. fosters a strong year round commitment to servicing the surrounding community through our events and programs. We also realize the special needs of certain community members during the holidays. For more than 6 years our chapter had adopted families for the Thanksgiving holiday. We provided them with a full Thanksgiving meal in an effort to relieve some holiday stress and provide them with the opportunity to have a happy holiday.
Chapter members and caring volunteers work together to help our low income and/or disadvantaged community members enjoy the holiday season. The Delta Gamma Zeta Chapter is fortunate to have the support of a generous community. Food drives at local banks, schools, chapter members’ employers, and donations from local grocery stores, individuals and the chapter help provide food to the needy families for the holidays. The families receive a full holiday meals such as whole turkeys, side dishes and desserts. Thanks to extraordinary community support, our Adopt-A-Family program creates an average of over $100 worth of goods per family to assist in creating them a joyous holiday.
Recipients are determined through an application process which is based on individual need. Recipients’ needs are verified and accepted for assistance based on a process using fundamentals from the DES assistance guidelines.
In our quest to find new and innovative ways to reach the multitude, Delta Gamma Zeta reinvented this program in 2009. Through the innovation of chapter member Kenya Brim-Davis, the Thanksgiving Adopt-A-Family program was expanded into a full informative service event.
The event, held at the First New Life Missionary Church here in Phoenix included a performance by our chapter’s high school youth auxiliary group, a presentation of other services that our chapter offers, and the food basket presentation. As a result of Kenya’s commitment and guidance, the chapter was able to provide 17 families with a full Thanksgiving meal basket, including a turkey at this beautiful occasion, thus, giving birth to the ‘new’ Delta Gamma Zeta Adopt-A-Family event.
In 2010, the program was taken a step further to include a presentation by other community partners that could provide assistance to the basket recipients and also included a heartfelt testimonial from one of the recipients. And, with the assistance of generous donors, Chase Bank and Wal-Mart, 19 recipients were able to feed their families for Thanksgiving.
Families needing assistance are free to contact our chapter beginning October 1st of each year. Applications are available through the first week of November.
